Match
Summary:
Outsider
Honduras got well into the game and took the Atlanta gold
medalists by surprise when their star forward David Suazo
put them into the lead. Nigeria came back shortly after the
half-time break but never looked is if they were to take
over. After Leon's 2-1 on the hour and David Suazo's second
goal fifteen minutes from the end, the Central Americas
looked set to stage a surprise. However, the defending
champions worked yet another miracle by coming back in the
last phase of the match. Substitute Agali and, in the dying
seconds, Yakubu with a brilliant long-range blast saved the
Super Eagles from a disappointing start into the tournament.
FACTS & FIGURES
2x and 3x For the second time in 16 matches played
in the Olympic Games, Nigeria tied with a 3-3 score. The
first match was played in Puebla (Mexico) on 18 September
1968 against Brazil in the first round. The defending
champions have a score of 5 wins, 3 draws and 8 losses. For
the third time in a row Nigeria scored at least three goals
in a match: the African team won the 1996 semifinal against
Brazil 4-3 and beat Argentina in the Gold Medal Match by
3-2.
